New Game Stuff! 4/4/2019

About a month ago, I got laid off from my job, so I haven't been able to really get a lot of exciting new game stuff. I did manage to get a few things before the layoff and some small stuff afterwards too. Let's get on with it.

Before I lost my job, I did snag a few cheap games - Spot: the Video Game and Kid Niki: Radical Ninja for NES and Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose for SNES. I've been collecting all the 7 Up Spot games recently, and I had the Genesis Tiny Toon Adventures game when I was little. I thought it might be fun to try the SNES game, which is similar in some ways but different in others. As for Kid Niki, it looks great. I read about it last year and have been looking for a clean copy. My friend Tyler is also really into this game and talks about it all day and all night.

I snagged these two games from Japan - Cu-On-Pa and Mojib Ribbon. The former is a Super Famicom puzzle game involving rolling a cube to match colored faces. The latter is a spin-off of Vib-Ribbon, Masaya Matsuura's post-Parappa rhythm game. I heard about Cu-On-Pa, and Buster Busts Loose, from SNESDrunk on YouTube.

SaGa Frontier 2 is a game that I got really interested in out of nowhere. I love the art style and am hoping to get started with this soon. The first one was a bit disappointing to me, so I am hoping this can live up to the great Final Fantasy 2.

I ended up going to Half-Price Books on a whim and found a bunch of $2 PS1 games. I had almost got Olympic Summer Games in the past but passed it up then, as I was not sure if I had it. Bass Rise was a game that I recently heard about in a PlayStation group on Facebook. Both look fun enough for $2. I like getting odd games if they are cheap. These games were especially enticing, as they appeared to be almost new despite being open. The other $2 PS1 clearance games were like that too. I planned to return for them once I was sure of which ones I did or did not have.

Mad Maestro looks kind of silly and fun, and it was cheap. I got it while I was submitting a job application after looking at it on eBay for several years. It was in good condition at the store and only like $3.

This PS2 memory card came from my local Goodwill. That store had a computer section until the last month. When it closed, they got rid of a lot of stuff cheap. This was 25 or 50¢. It cleaned up nice.

Around this time, I was still pretty upset about the job loss, and I decided to go back to Half-Price Books and get a few of the cheap PS1 games. When I got there, I found the games gone but a sale going on. For some reason, I did not get the coupons in the mail, but my grandmother did. We went back a few times, and I was able to get all of these games and some books like the one above that stares right at you using the coupons that she did not want anyway. I was glad to get these uncommon Atari 2600 games at 40%-50% off.

These Sega Genesis games came from my friend Brian. He was getting rid of some stuff for spring cleaning. I had some of these already, including Taz in Escape from Mars, the first video game that I ever owned as a bundle with my Sega Genesis. I was happy to get these from him - even a small gift is nice to get.

These games came from a local store after I finished doing an interview for a job that seems pretty cool. I was thinking about Skate or Die! a lot recently. I have never really played it but always thought the name was amusing. This is the second game, as the store did not have a nice copy of the first game. Shamus is an old arcade game modeled after Berzerk.

Finally, the other day I found this F-Zero GX strategy guide from Nintendo Power at the same Goodwill that closed the computer store. My girlfriend wanted to go and get a chair and a bookshelf forms the store, but both were gone when we got there. My friend Jim had also informed me that the store had Darwin's World, a D20 Modern post-apocalyptic sourcebook that I thought might be cool. The book was huge but did not seem that interesting; I was hoping to just use some ideas from it without the baggage of D20 rules. I was happy when I found this guide instead, as F-Zero is one of my favorite game series. It even had the poster inside! That's awesome!

Everything isn't hopeless for me in terms of employment. I have unemployment coming and there are some good job prospects on the horizon too. I am not afraid about the future, and finding small deals like these helps brighten my days always. I hope you find some cool stuff in your own special places wherever you are!

The Convention Dimension: 3 Rivers Comicon

DISCLAIMER: I received a press pass to attend this event. The opinions here are still mine. Also, please consider reading this brief article about my various illnesses and such over the last several months. This article is very late, but things have been difficult. Originally, I had also planned to publish these pfotos to Instagram, again, in a more timely manner. Here we are though! At the beginning of June, I attended 3 Rivers Comicon at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh. I was surprised to see this event at the convention center, as I couldn't recall seeing it advertised in years past (I later heard that it was held at the Century III and Waterfront Malls in previous years). American comic book stuff is really not a huge thing on my radar, so it's not a surprise that I missed out on the earlier events. My friend Tyler wanted to check out this convention, so I decided to check it out as well. Anyway, 3 Rivers Comicon is held by local chain New Di...

PlayStation Basement #95 - Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition

PlayStation Basement is a weekly review of games for the original PlayStation that are somewhat obscure, unusual, or unknown. Games are rated Good, Bad, or Neutral to emphasize the review itself. Now, let’s go! So summer’s here and the time is right for fighting in the street, and what better way to start this season than with a fighting game? Today’s game is SNK’s attempt at a 3D fighter: Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition . Originally released to the arcade on January 28th, 1999, the game followed on Japanese and North American PlayStation consoles on June 24th and November 30th, respectively. In what seems to be SNK’s attempt at mimicking their rival Capcom’s Street Fighter EX , Wild Ambition re-tells the first Fatal Fury game with some of the mainstay characters from later games such as Mai Shiranui and Mr. Karate except this time they’re all...
