New Game Stuff! 2/25/2019

Almost everybody likes talking about stuff they bought or acquired, me included. I'm hoping to have this as a irregular series, probably around twice a month. Recently, I haven't been buying a lot of games, mostly using my money to pay off debts, but here are some things I got in the last few weeks.

Super Mario Bros. 3 and  The Uncanny X-Men were small impulse purchases I made when I went to a local pawn shop to pick up a boxed copy of Xexyz. That game had been snatched up, so I grabbed Mario and Bionic Commando, the latter being a game that I was not sure if I had. I ended up noticing that I already had it and returned to switch it with X-Men, a game that is considered pretty bad. Super Mario Bros. 3 is great of course, and it is one of the first games that I ever played (at a friend's house). It also came out in Japan exactly one year before I was born. Though I already had and completed the GBA version, it's nice to finally have the NES version too.

The two CIB Game Boy Color games were similarly cheap, impulse purchases. I got both for $6! I enjoyed completing the first Crazy Castle game last year, so getting the third one (and the fifth on GBA), makes me excited to complete them all. I still need the fourth one, though. Toobin' is a goofy Atari arcade game that I enjoy.

I grabbed Clockwork Knight from a seller in Facebook's Console Purist group. I have a very small Saturn collection and have been wanting to expand it. This game has kind of mixed reviews, but my friend Tyler recommended it. The look of the game makes it seem like it will be pretty fun, and it was cheap.

Vegas Stakes is a game I learned about from SNES Drunk on YouTube. It looks pretty cool, a sequel to 1990's Vegas Dream on NES. It's a game about trying to win $10,000,000 from $1,000 at various casinos and looks to have some nice slice-of-life storytelling in a sense.

The Liar Princess & The Blind Prince looks really cool, and the collector's edition has some nice stuff included, like a hardcover book. I like the fairy-tale look of it.

Epidemic is a game that I have been thinking about since the beginning of the year. I completed the often-maligned Kileak: The DNA Imperative in January, and I loved it. I love the dungeon-crawler aspect to this early FPS, something that was in a lot of these games that is missing from titles in the post-Halo world. Epidemic is the sequel to Kileak. I hope it lives up to the fun I had with the nightmarish descent of the first game.

Finally, we have two non-video game things. There's a plush Koopa Paratrooper. I have been eyeing a few Mario plushes for the last few months when I saw them at a local store. This was the first one I bought, as I really like the design. I had considered some in the past, but didn't like some of the weaker design elements, especially the glued on Goomba eyebrows. C'mon, Nintendo.

The last thing is something that I am most excited for - the Hong Kong Action Theatre! RPG. This is a martial arts tabletop RPG with an unusual twist: the campaigns are all films with the characters playing the actors playing the movie characters. I wanted this game, as I have been trying to set up an RPG campaign with a focus on supernatural martial arts. I had heard of this game years ago but never saw it until recently in the used bin at my local game store, Phantom of the Attic. The movie studio idea is pretty different from what I had in mind, but I think it will be super interesting. I want to get the supplemental books now too; one of them, To Live and Die in HK, will even help with my non-studio ideas. We'll see how it goes, and I'll see you next time.

The Convention Dimension: 3 Rivers Comicon

DISCLAIMER: I received a press pass to attend this event. The opinions here are still mine. Also, please consider reading this brief article about my various illnesses and such over the last several months. This article is very late, but things have been difficult. Originally, I had also planned to publish these pfotos to Instagram, again, in a more timely manner. Here we are though! At the beginning of June, I attended 3 Rivers Comicon at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh. I was surprised to see this event at the convention center, as I couldn't recall seeing it advertised in years past (I later heard that it was held at the Century III and Waterfront Malls in previous years). American comic book stuff is really not a huge thing on my radar, so it's not a surprise that I missed out on the earlier events. My friend Tyler wanted to check out this convention, so I decided to check it out as well. Anyway, 3 Rivers Comicon is held by local chain New Di...

PlayStation Basement #35 - Spin Jam

This review was originally published on the  Console Purist  Facebook group on April 27th, 2019. It’s Saturday, and that means it’s time for PlayStation Basement! PlayStation Basement is a weekly review of an odd or obscure game for the original PlayStation. Games are rated Good, Bad, or Neutral. Now, let’s go! Today, I’m thinking about brightly colored Easter eggs and also flowers. My partner and I are planning to do some gardening today, so here is a game about flowers and bright colors. It’s Spin Jam , a puzzle game developed by Empire Interactive and published by Take-Two Interactive. It was released in Europe and North America in the year 2000. Spin Jam is about matching brightly colored balls to launch other balls into matching petals. That might sound pretty weird, and that’s why it’s a perfect match for the PlayStation Basement. The cover art is basically the same in both regions. Spin Jam shows Lemondrop and some bubbles flying about in a swirl of...

Tekko Together

EDIT: This article was originally published on June 30th, 2022 but has been updated on July 8th. I was not initially happy with everything. Unfortunately, due to being extremely busy and not feeling well, and now having developed COVID in the last few days, I am only now getting everything together. My apologies! Tekko (formerly Tekkoshocon) is Pittsburgh's anime convention since 2003. In the almost 20 years of existence, Tekko has grown from just a few hundred people in a hotel to over 10,000 attendees inhabiting the David L. Lawrence Convention Center for four days! Despite this growth, Tekko has fallen on some hard times recently, and, should you choose to accept this mission, requires the assistance of the community. COVID has done a number on several conventions, and Tekko is no different. Convention Center regulations have caused what historically been a spring convention to occur in the summer. Now also the DLLCC is requiring significantly more payment upfront, causing Tekko...
